Function of pili

Pili or pilus are found in bacteria. Pili are mainly involved in two functions such as attachment and gene transfer.
Pili are generally used by bacteria to adher or to attach on a surface or sometimes to host.
The pili which is involved in gene transfer mechanism is called sex pili or fertility pili or F pili. The gene is transferred through the pilus from donor cell to recipient cell, this process is called conjugation. The cell containing F pilus is called F+ cell while the cell lacking F pilus is called F- cell. By the process of gene transfer various characteristics of donor cell are transferred to recepeint via bridge like F pilus.
