This may be applied to academic education as well as experience. It is often used to explain any observed differences in individual income and/or productivity based on the amount of education or experience that they have accumulated.
Many teaching institutions use it to justify the investment in tuition and time to prospective students. "Lifetime earnings" comparisons are a common example used to demonstrate the advantages of further education.
