There is more than one mountain range in the western part of North America. The Rockies are the longest north to south, but not the most western. The Cascade and Sierra ranges are more west than the Rockies.

The Costal ranges stretch from just north of San Diego to the Washington Oregon border. This range is a result of the transverse fault where the Pacific plate and the North American plate.
The Sierra Nevada are mainly a granite range that has resulted from the upwelling of magma from the subduction of the Pacific plate under the the North American plate. This range extends from the Transverse mountains of Southern California to Northern California.
The Sierra Madre are mainly a granite range that has also related to the subduction zone of Pacific plate and the North American plate. This range extends from the transverse range of southern California past San Diego and down into Mexico.
