The purpose of an expository essay is to educate and inform the reader, in an unbiased manner, about some topic or concept.

An expository essay should explain a concept or topic by:

  • defining the concept, both generally and then in detail;
  • explain and expand upon the details of the concept;
  • examine one or more arguments concerning the concept and its (their) basis.

An expository essay should be:

  • clearly structured, logical and straightforward;
  • balanced and unbiased;
  • lacking in personal bias or opinion.
