To understand the most fundamental physical processes in the universe.

Explanation:

Our scientific philosophy assumes that ALL physical forces must be related because they necessarily derived from the same event or series of events.

We already know what we perceive as separate forces in many cases are just the way those forces operate a different physical scales.

Quantum mechanics does not violate Newtonian mechanics, but it applies similar forces at an atomic scale, at which Newtonian mechanics are inadequate.

Similarly, you can solve common macro-force problems with quantum mechanical equations, but reliable and adequate solutions (for the physical scale of the problems) an be obtained more easily with Newtonian mechanical equations.

However, without a valid "Fundamental Theory of Everything" we know that there are many parts of our universe and its interactions that we may NOT really know as well as we might like to think that we do!
