Meiosis is reductional division , it helps in formation of gametesenter image source here
As you can see in the figure , after meiosis is completed 4 haploid cells are produced which contains half the number of chromosomes of the parents.
The gametes formed during meiosis later undergo fertilisation to produce diploid zygote.enter image source here
