Calcite has the chemical formula #CaCO_3# and we classify minerals into the carbonate mineral category if they include the carbonate ion in their strcture, #CO_3^(2-)#.

There are two other polymorphs of calcite being aragonite and vaterite, they all have the same chemical composition but become stable at different temperatures and pressures.
