Chemists routinely use "litres" to measure liquid and gaseous volume.

Explanation:

"Cubic metres" -= 1000*L is a very large volume.
In some of the literature you will find "cubic decimetres", where 1*dm^-3 = 1xx(10^-1m)^3 = 10^-3*m^3=1*L
For smaller volumes you may use the milliliter (mL) which is 1/1000 L and the same as a cubic centimeter (cm^3).

They nicely convert into each other by factors of 1000.
