A Democratic political machine politically active in New York City. from 1786 to the 1960s when it disappeared from the political landscape.


Tammany Hall Society significantly connected with immigrant groups, particularly the Irish and business people. It was also at times a center of graft and corruption. FDR was against Tammany Hall and it suffered during his presidency. The Society adapted to changing political conditions over a long period of time.

Tammany Hall supported Aaron Burr, America's first Vice President, even a bit after he shot Alexander Hamilton in a duel.

Its 20th Century leaders had connections to Organized Crime.
