Be informed and prepared as much as you can.

Explanation:

Avoiding natural disasters starts with knowing what your risks are in your particular community. This is highly variable around the world.

1) Do some research to find out what you country's specific natural disaster risks are - further, find out what the risks for your particular town, village, community are.

2) Next, find out what to do should a natural disaster occur in your area. Where are shelters? Where might aide be available? How would you get out of an area if it were impacted?

3) Finally, develop a plan of action and advise your family. Practice it if you can.

For example, I recently moved to the west coast of Canada, which is known for earth quakes and tsunamis, so I have step 1 down, but I am still working on steps 2 and 3.
