The Reconstruction Era was over

The achievement of racial equality was actually abandoned and it eventually led to the implementation of segregation. It came through what is known as "Jim Crow" laws, it meant separate public spaces for whites and blacks. Some scholars saw the Reconstruction as a "Second American Revolution" which failed, the 1877 compromise also meant that the military occupation of the South by the North officially ended.
