Around the time of WWI, nationalism was at a high in most countries in Europe. Essentially every country thought that they where the greatest and could crush all nearby countries with ease. At the same time, all these countries wanted to expand their borders, or take back land previously lost in recent wars. All this added to the fact that everyone had promised to help some country if a war where to happen led to tensions being at an all time high. When Archduke Franz Ferdinand was shot by a Serbian Nationalist, Austro-Hungaria declared war an Serbia. Since Russia had vowed to defend all the Slavic states, they declared war on Austro-Hungaria. Germany had promised to protect them, and France and UK had vowed to protect Russia. So what would've been a quick take over of Serbia turned into WWI
