The rich farmlands of Oregon drew thousands of settlers. The land was free to those who could make it the Oregon Territory. People who were farming on marginal lands in Indiana, illinois and Missouri found the lure of rich farmland in the Willamette valley irresistible.

Also the British, Russians and Americans all claimed the Oregon Territory. The US put out a patriotic plea for American settlers to move to the Oregon Territory to establish the claims of the United States to the Oregon Territory. So many people from the states settled in the Oregon Territory that most of the Oregon Territory went to America.
