Why do convection currents rise in air?

Due to Charles's Law.

Explanation:

Charles's Law states that temperature is directly proportional to volume. This means that as a parcel of air is heated it's volume will increase. Since the volume increases but the mass of the air is the same, the density has to decrease (density is mass over volume). Since the air is less dense it will rise.
