Why do objects with mass attract? Why would an object with mass dent space and time?

The Newtonian view is that the attraction is due a gravitational force of attraction that obeys an inverse square law. general relativity perspective does not agree and asserts it the deformation of space-time caused by massive objects. the later is the current accepted explanation to the extent it explains more a number of phenomenal that Newtonian physics cannot explain.
