Why do we take an antacid when we have acid reflex/upset stomach?

Because they help us cope with the pain...

Explanation:

When our stomach gets too acidic, and has lots of acidic ions in it, we can take antacids to reduce that pain. Antacids work by releasing alkaline ions that neutralizes those acidic ions and form water molecules, and therefore reducing the amount of acid in our body and rising the #"pH"# to a considerable level.

This helps us deal with the pain as well.
