Rubies are a solution of Aluminum Oxide and Chromium

Explanation:

Ruby is a form of corundum a compound of aluminum oxide #Al_2O_3#

This compound is very hard a 9 out of 10 on the hardness scale. Diamonds are the only gem stone harder.

Corundum comes in many different colors depending on the trace chemicals dissolved into the Compound. The most common forms of Corundum are the blue sapharia and the red ruby. Other forms are called fancy corundum.

The ruby is formed when a Chromium ion is dissolved in the Corundum crystal . It is the Chromium ion that gives the ruby its red color.
