Mercury is liquid in a wide range of temperature (-39°C +356°C) while ethyl alcohol (-114 °C +80°C) is more usefull in cold range. Moreover mercury has a small termal capacity and a linear expansion coefficient that alcohol havn't. Unfortunately mercury is tossic and it is replaced almost everywhere
