Probably because they could help us to understand the mechanism of gravitation.
Explanation:
By observing, detecting and measuring gravitational waves we can reach an understanding of the phenomenon of gravitation.
It would be like to hear the sound of a violin and be able to figure out the responsible for that sound and the way it was generated!
