Why is the universe constantly expanding?

Due to the Big Bang.

Explanation:

It may seem odd, but that initial explosion provided all the force required for things to expand as there is no force slowing matter down except gravity. So far gravity has been to weak/has insufficient time to stop the expansion, though it has slowed.

Please don't ask about dark matter/dark energy. The planet is troubled enough these days.
