Why was farming very difficult for the early farmers of the plains?

Drought, expensive equipment/railroad costs.

Explanation:

In the late 1800's there were various droughts, making farming difficult. Also, the cost to ship goods on the Transcontinental Railroad was very expensive, and so was the cost of farm machinery. This left a lot of farmers in debt, and lead to the formation of the Populist party; a party that favored the needs of the average farmer, over those of the wealthy.
