What happens to the nucleus in a fission reaction?

In a fission reaction, the nucleus is divided into more nuclei.

If we take an atom of, say, Plutonium, and we bombard it with neutrons it will be split into two new atoms - as will several neutrons. The neutrons then bang into other atoms and, thus, a chain fission reaction occurs.
