What is the relationship between the ideal gas law and the kinetic theory?

1 Answer

The kinetic molecular theory can be applied to gases to explain why they behave the ways that ideal gas law can be used to predict (calculate).

Remember the ideal gas law is: PV = nRT

I'll discuss a few ways...

If you increase the number of particles (increase n = number of moles) the pressure must increase due to increased number of collisions since there are more particles which collide with each other and the walls of the container which holds the gas.

If you increase the temperature of a gas, the volume will increase because because the number of collisions will increase and the energy of collisions will be higher because warmer particles are moving faster than cool particles.
