The chemical symbol for carbon is C, and it can be found on the periodic table of the elements. The carbon atom has four valence electrons, as can be observed in the following diagram, which shows the electron dot (Lewis dot) structure for carbon.
The placement of carbon on the periodic table also allows us to determine its valence number of electrons. Carbon is in group 14/IVA, and all of the elements in that group have four valence electrons.
