The standard electron configuration for magnesium would be #1s^2 2s^2 2p^6 3s^2#

The noble gas one row above magnesium is neon. Neon would have an electron configuration of #1s^2 2s^2 2p^6#.

Therefore, #1s^2 2s^2 2p^6# can be replaced by the noble gas [Ne].
This makes the noble gas configuration of magnesium
[Ne] #3s^2#
