In general, there is no formula for tension. Instead, you usually have to find all of the other forces in the problem and then solve for tension.

Explanation:

For example, let's say there are three force acting on your object, two that you know and one unknown tension force. The object is as rest.

#F_1 = 5 N#

#F_2 = -10 N#

#a=0#

#T=?#

Using Newton's second law :

#sum F = F_1 + F_2 + T = m a#

#5 N - 10 N + T = 0#

#T = 5N#
