How does the skin, as part of the integumentary system, differ from the plasma membrane of a cell?

plasma membrane is permeable and allows exchange of materials both ways (in and out) and is fluid in nature.
whereas skin is keratinized layer and (since keratin is insoluble in water )acts as protective layer and first line of defence against microorganisms and toxic substances.it is not fluid rather solid.
