It means that it lose all its fuel to be fused.
Explanation:
When the central core of the star become mainly iron, nuclear fusion stops. That is the time when iron atoms instead of releasing energy, absorbs energy. Soon, the energy absorbed will be released as the star breaks apart in a tremendous explosion called supernova.
