It is an instruments that detects and measures seismic waves.
This is an example of a seismograph. As you can see, it has a weight that is attached to a spring (sometimes wire). The weight is not attached directly to the earth, so even when the earth moves it will remain nearly still. There is a pen attached to the weight that records movement on a sheet of paper that is wound around a constantly rotating drum.
This is what the record of wavy line is. The sheet of paper that has the record of the waves is called a seismogram.
