At the Battle of Bunker Hill a black man named Peter Salem put his life in grave danger while holding off the advancing British soldiers as the Americans retreated. Another black man named Salem Poor also fought at Bunker Hill. Each man had received his freedom some years earlier. Poor was from Andover and Salem was from Framingham.
