( cross-multiply )

# 18(3x - 11 ) = (- 5 ) xx 36#

#rArr 54x - 198 = -180 #

(Note: the negative (-) on the right hand side of the equation must be attached to one or other of 5 or 18 but not both.)

now 54x = -180 + 198 = 18

# rArr x = 18/54 = 1/3 #
