Why were British troops sent to Boston in 1770?

To insure that English law was respected.
Explanation:
Boston, more than any other American city, abounded with rebellious people who openly defied the Townshend Acts and other laws made in England. We know that Samuel Adams made a point of flouting his dislike of recently enacted English laws by convening groups of rebels who openly attacked tax collectors and other English authority.
The King felt the presence of troops in Boston would quell the fiery followers of Adams but it actually had the opposite effect. Out of it came the "Sons of Liberty." Today we would view them as extremists who very vocally made known their disdain for the condition of the state.
