As the male ages, the most typical change in the reproductive system happens in the prostate gland. Some would also experience decrease of libido.

Explanation:

The prostate gland is a walnut shaped organ that helps in the production of semen during the reproduction process. However, when the male ages, the prostate becomes enlarged and obstructs the urethra.

There are two types of prostate enlargement. One is the Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia where the prostate cells are only enlarged and can be cured by a procedure called transurethral resection of the prostate.

The other is the more dreadful one which is prostate cancer where the cells have mutated and becomes malignant that spreads all over the body. This would need an operation and chemotherapy depending on its current stage of discovery.

That is why it is extremely important, if not, mandatory for males to consult a urologist at 40 years and above for a digital rectal exam (uncomfortable for many males) and prostate specific antigen test (less invasive blood test).

Some males who reach 40 years old and above may experience a decrease in the production of testosterone which affects the libido and makes the man lose interest in sexual activity.
