One reason that the formation of a large satellite the moon is so important is the formation of tides.

It is the gravity of the moon that creates the tides on earth. Without a large moon there would be no tides on the earth. The intertidal zone is vital to many organisms on earth. Without the tides that the moon creates this organisms would not exist.
