This is just a suggestion, but here's what I always do: add water to the mixture of sand and salt. While the salt is dissolving, place a coffee filter over a funnel into another container. Pour the mixture in. The sand should be caught by the filter and the salt, in the water, should be in the container. Then you just have to boil off the water (carefully!) and wait for the sand to dry.
