This is a tricky one... And I am answering it for the volume of a liquid... the answer is liter (or litre)

Explanation:

The reason this is tricky (and someone is will raise this on here) is the litre was originally incorrectly defined. It was supposed to be 1000 #cm^3# but was slightly off (I think it was something like 1000.0028 #cm^3#, but don't quote me on that as I can't remember the exact figure). So, for awhile volume was defined as #dm^3# which is exactly 1,000 #cm^3# (it's a 10 cm by 10 cm by 10 cm cube). However, now it is back as the liter or litre.
