Pituitary gland is one, i.e. an unpaired structure attached to hypothalamus. But it can be divided in anterior and posterior pituitary.
Explanation:
Pituitary gland has dual origin.
Anterior pituitary arises from endoderm of embryonic gut.
Posterior pituitary originates from embryonic ectodermal nervous system
Together anterior and posterior lobes form the pituitary gland.
