During the nine months a baby develops inside a woman's body, the placenta develops as an organ to provide nutrients to the baby. It grows inside the uterus and detaches from the uterus during childbirth - it's what the umbilical cord is attached to.
Placenta accreta is what happens when the placenta attaches too deeply into the uterus and so instead of the placenta sloughing off, it remains either partially or entirely attached.
