Beginning in 1887, Helen's family brought in a teacher, Anne Sullivan, to teach Helen how to communicate. Their relationship lasted 49 years and enabled Helen to not only learn about the world around her and to communicate, but to attend and graduate from college, to become a leading humanitarian, and to help found the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union).
