In this sentence John is a subject, while the teacher is a (direct) object.
If we wanted to ask a question about John (the subject) we would use the word who:
Who gave his composition to the teacher?
If we wanted to ask a question about the teacher (object) we would use the word whom:
Whom did John give his composition?
