There are many species of Gram negative bacteria (those who do not retain crystal violet stain in the Gram staining procedure), among which are many pathogens.
Salmonella, Shigella, Helicobacter, Legionella, etc are examples of Gram negative pathogenic bacteria.
They are characterised by a very thin peptidoglycan cell wall between an inner cytoplasmic membrane and an outer cell membrane. This wall is thicker in Gram positive bacteria, hence, in these species, it is unable to retain the crystal violet stain and appear pink under microscopic examination.
