In 1938, the first living specimen was found and identified as a 'living fossil' in South Africa. The organism was named Latimeria chalumnae, because of two reasons:
1. honoring the lady museum curator who took interest in studying it, eventually identifying it as coelacanth; and
2. specifying the marine location off Chalumna river from where it was caught.
Later in 1990s, another species of coelacath were discovered from sea near Indonesia. They are slow evolving organisms, living in deeper parts of Indian ocean.
