Well clearly you need the metal, #"iron"#, and the oxidant, #"oxygen"#..........and these are the 2 elements.

Of course iron oxide is a very broad church; there are simple oxides of iron, #FeO#, and #Fe_2O_3#, and higher order iron oxides, i.e. #Fe_3O_4#, which is a mixed oxide of #Fe^(II)# and #Fe^(III)#. See here for more details.
