The main reason for star formation is gravity.
Explanation:
Stars are formed by trillions of particles held together by immense gravity.
But, if the gravitational pull is less, then there would be no star formation, but it more likely to form a cloud of gases, dust, etc.
Still, if the gravity is so immense compared to other stars, there are chances of the star becoming a black hole or a neutron star.
