Explanation:

In aqueous solution, we can representation the neutralization reaction as:

#HX(aq)+M(OH)(aq) rarr MX(aq) + H_2O#.

And in water we conceive of the hydronium ion, #H_3O^+#, as the acidium species, and the hydroxide ion, #HO^-#, as the base.

And this goes back to the old designation of such reactions in aqueous solution:

#"Acid + Base "rarr" Salt and water"#.......................
