In all common states of matter the particles are in motion.

Explanation:

In a solid the particles are vibrating in place. I like to think of you are watching a game in a stadium, the solids are fans in their seats, they stay in their seats, they don't get to run around.

In a liquid the particles are just sliding or flowing back and forth. In the stadium these are the players on the sidelines. They move back and worth in their area, but can't jump out into the field.

In a gas the particles move in all directions at great speed. These are the players in the game, there are no limits on their moments.
