Alcohol dependence is you need a drink as you have drunk so much in the past that it has destroyed your liver and to function you can not just stop drinking but need to be weaned off the alcohol slowly to stop your body going in to shock and to keep your liver working a while longer.

Alcohol abuse is you simply get heavily drunk on a regular basis but are still able to not drink and ruin your bodies essential functions. Too much alcohol abuse will lead to alcohol dependence.

Both can lead to alcohol poisoning which although treatable can also have life threatening implications.
