Separate into two inequalities:

#x + 5 > 18# and #-(x+5)>18#

Multiply the both sides of the second inequality by -1:

#x + 5 > 18# and #x+5 < -18#

Subtract 5 from both sides of both inequalities:

#x > 13# and #x < -23#

Interval notation:

#(-oo, -23)# and #(13, oo)#
