Construction on this hybrid cable-stayed/suspension bridge began in 1869. When completed in 1883 it connected the New York City boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn and spans the East River.
The main span of the Brooklyn bring is 1,595.5 feet. It was the first steel-wire suspension bridge constructed.
Originally called the New York and Brooklyn Bridge and the East River Bridge it later became popularly known as the Brooklyn Bridge. It was formally given its current name by the New York City government in 1915.
In 1964 the Brooklyn Bridge was designated a National Historic Landmark. And, in 1972, it was added to the National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark register.
