Why Ncl5 is an unlikely structure?!?!

Let's see.

Explanation:

Nitrogen is the first element of group-15 element of p-block.

The electronic configuration of nitrogen (N) is:

N_7rarr1s^(2)2s^(2)2p^(3)

Hence, the nitrogen atom is devoid of any sort of d orbital.

Therefore, it can not extend it's octet & hence can not accept 5 more electrons from the 5 chlorine atoms in whatever energy state it is.

Thus, N can not form NCl_5 compound.

For info, N can form a stable NCl_3 compound to complete it's octet.
